History
The history of Lürssen began in 1875 when 24-year-old Friedrich Lürssen opened a small workshop in Aumund (Bremen, Germany) to build 5-meter fishing boats. Within a year, the company started producing sport boats, which quickly gained popularity in Germany and won numerous regattas.
In 1886, Lürssen launched the world’s first motorboat, the 6-meter Rems, as a test model for Gottlieb Daimler’s new engine. Twenty years later, the racing boat Donnerwetter, designed by Otto Lürssen, achieved speeds of 35 knots.
Lürssen entered the superyacht segment in 1927 with the construction of the 36-meter motor yacht M/Y AAR IV. The company reentered the market in 1962 after World War II with the launch of the 55-meter M/Y PEGASUS II.
From the mid-1980s, Lürssen began forming the Lürssen Group, expanding into a major shipbuilding conglomerate. The group acquired several new facilities: in 1987, the Kröger shipyard on the Kiel Canal; in 2004, the Neue Jadewerft yard in Wilhelmshaven; in 2012, the Norderwerft shipyard in Hamburg; in 2013, the Peene Werft in Wolgast; and in 2016, Blohm+Voss.
Throughout its history, Lürssen has launched over 13,000 hulls.
