Scheepswerf de Ruiter, founded in 1963 by the Ruyter brothers in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, initially focused on building small cruisers to meet local demand. However, after facing financial difficulties 20 years later, the company was sold to entrepreneur Rien Moonen. This led to a reimagining of the company’s concept, shifting focus to the construction of "pocket" superyachts with steel and aluminum hulls, and rebranding as Moonen Yachts.

In 2019, Australian investors Matthew and Louise Baxter acquired the company and continued production under the Moonen Yachts name.

Throughout its history, Moonen Yachts has launched over 80 superyachts, including the classic models Moonen 84 and Moonen 97, which have become notable icons in the yachting world.

Moonen Yachts operates two production facilities in the Netherlands. The old yard in 's-Hertogenbosch handles yachts up to 35 meters and manages design and carpentry work for all brand series. The yard in Groot-Ammers focuses on building models up to 40 meters.

Each year, the shipyard launches up to two luxury yacht hulls from its facilities.

Currently, Moonen Yachts offers two semi-custom models: the 34-meter steel long-range yacht, Moonen 110 Mustique, and the 37-meter displacement superyacht, Moonen 122 Martinique, made from steel and aluminum. Both are scheduled to be launched in 2025. In addition to these, Moonen also builds fully custom yachts, allowing for complete customization of layouts and interiors to meet the specific needs of each client.

The flagship of the Moonen fleet is the 42-meter superyacht M/Y SOFIA, which combines the elegance of classic yachts with the functionality of expedition vessels.
